Now that you have finally decided on what you’re going to name your house, how are you going to display that name? Yes, even more decisions to make ….
At least this one shouldn’t be as difficult as settling on a name in the first place though. That’s because there are lots of companies around willing to paint, stencil or carve your house name onto various materials of your choosing.
Getting the right look for your house name
Of course, when it comes to choosing whether to print your house name on wood, slate etc then the actual name itself will have an influence. If you have chosen a period name, for instance, you’re not going to want to imprint it on a piece of modern plastic or acrylic and likewise, if it’s a contemporary name you want a modern look to reflect it (glass, metal etc).
The style of your house will also have had a bearing on the name you opted for. If it’s an Art Deco designed home (ie in the 1920 and 1930s) and you’ve continued with the theme then you’ll want to choose a particular type face. The same goes for an Arts and Crafts style (late 20th century) or Victorian and Georgian build.
Choosing the best location for your house name sign
Then you have to decide where to put your house name. Most people will put it to the left, or the right-hand side, of the door, just above eye level. But then it can also sit above the doorway or, if it’s a lovely little country cottage then how about sitting it on the little wooden gate at the end of the path?
You may have a lot of ivy trailing around the door frame or other climbing plants growing up near the doorway anyway so it would be impossible to hang the sign there without it becoming obscured in some way.
And another thing… or two…
Two other things to think about. The first is, will you have the number of your home sitting alongside the house name sign? By law, you will need the house number up somewhere, regardless of whether it’s beside the name or not, as it’s a postal necessity.
The second thing to ponder is whether or not you will have the name lit up ie by using some clever concealed LED lighting within the name plaque itself, or just above it (in the form of a picture light).
How to display your house name sign
From hanging with a bracket to attaching to a post and simply affixing to the wall, there are many ways to attach the name of your house to the dwelling itself. We have listed some of the more popular ways to display a house sign right here:
Hanging your sign using a bracket.
Using a bracket is a lovely, and rather upmarket way, to hang a house sign. It’s especially fitting for older Victorian or Edwardian style metal or even stone house signs. As well as looking great, a bracket hanging out from the side or front of your house, displaying the name means it will also be sign better than if it was simply attached to the wall. Of course, the downside is that if it’s a windy day that sign is going to make quite a bit of noise banging against the bracket (especially if both are metal).
Anyway, back to the bracket – it’s possible to choose form wrought iron or stainless steel and either a single or a double-sided version. The name sign is then hung on using eye hooks (and which is why it swings).
Displaying your name on a post
If you have a long driveway then it doesn’t only look good, but is also sensible, to have the name of your house on a post (or between two – especially if it’s a lovely, modern stainless-steel plaque). That way no-one has an excuse to come up your drive way and stake out your home claiming it was because they weren’t sure if it was the property they were looking for.
You can also have a traditional-looking post sign, by putting a spike into the ground and hanging a bracket the sign can be attached to. In some cases, you may have to resort to using a concrete foundation – especially is the ground is a little soggy or the soil too dry.
Freestanding rock signs
Having the name of your home attached to a piece of freestanding rock on the grass at the end of your driveway, always looks fab. It could also sit right beside your front door if the garden’s not that big.
Wall-mounted house signs
Probably the most popular way to hang is a house sign is to place it on the front wall of your home. This can give the sign a 3-day effect and is where the while illuminated LED lights part comes in.
Whichever way you choose to mount your house sign, it will no doubt look impressive – and will certainly make your house feel homelier than just giving it a number.
